IVR — Interactive Voice Response

IVR (Interactive Voice Response) is the legacy "press 1 for sales, press 2 for service" phone menu system. Modern voice AI has largely replaced it for customer-facing scenarios.

What IVR is

IVR systems route callers based on keypad input or limited speech recognition. They're scripted decision trees: caller says or presses something, system routes to the next branch.

Why IVR is being phased out

  • Customers hate menu trees (70%+ prefer talking to a human)
  • Limited intent understanding fails on edge cases
  • Cannot complete transactions or bookings
  • Brand-damaging in competitive industries

What replaces IVR

Voice AI agents that hold real conversations, understand intent, and complete tasks — booking appointments, answering questions, taking payments — without forcing callers through a menu.
